A Bear, Deer, a Pileated Woodpecker and Fishing on the South Fork Walla Walla River, Sept. 28, 2009 : The trail leads for 20 miles up to Deduct Spring, with good fishing along the way. A Farwell to Sadie the Dalmatian, and a Welcome to Nora the Schnauzer : Sadie the Dalmatian, 15, died Dec. 16, 2008, peacefully at home in the presence of family members including Don and Darlene Davis, their daughter Dawn Hermann (Sadie's long-time caregiver), family friend Steve Barer and veterinarian Dr. John Ladderud. She will be missed and never forgotten although a gift that couldn't be refused has brought Nora the Schnauzer, eight weeks old, to live with the Davis family.

Wallowa Lake Wind Storm : Winds reported at 122 mph hit Wallowa Lake State Park, at the edge of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and near Joseph, Ore.,  on Nov. 19. Dried-up Thief Valley Reservoir and environs, Aug. 14, 2007 : We (Darlene, Sadie the Dalmatian and I) visited Thief Valley Reservoir because of complaints that ``Millions of fish had died '' as the reservoir dried up from irrigation and drought. It's an irrigation pond, however, and fish often perish when the water is drained. We continued on the Elkhorn Scenic Loop and back home and included those photos.

Balde Eagle Fest, Grand Coulee, Feb. 18, 2007 : Darlene, Sadie and I drove 190 miles to the Balde Eagle Festival at the Grand Coulee area. We saw five of six eagles in the sky, but two did perform something of a mating ritual in flight. That, the waterfalls and basalt-ridged scenery made the trip a pleasant one.

The Nature Conservancy manages a 42-square-mile area within this Prairie, the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. Joseph, Wallowa Lake, Hat Point : A few days in Joseph, Ore., provided an opportunity to lounge around town, to hang out at Wallowa Lake, to pause at a nearby buffalo ranch and to bump along to an 6,800 feet elevation at the not quite so nearby Hat Point lookout tower. Unfortunately, smoke from wildfires prevented the usual marvelous view from 7,094 feet (from atop the tower) into Hells Canyon and to the Snake River at 1,250 feet.

Red's Horse Ranch, Minam Lodge : Red's Horse Ranch once drew Hollywood's elite, who flew into the Eagle Cap Wilderness site to party and play, but it eventually became run down and not profitable. The Forest Service purchased it and uses it for a retreat of sorts. Minam Lodge, a mile from Reds, remains privately owned and operated for the public, mostly during the fall hunting seasons.
